Top 10 Job Search Engines

January 27th, 2009
The job search engine is essential to any job search. Whether the candidate is an administrative assistant, teacher, government worker, or information technology specialist, posting a resume to one or several job search engines is essential to finding a new job. In addition to the ability to apply for jobs via job search engines, recruiters may call qualified candidates out of the blue for a telephone or in-person interview. In fact, this may occur more frequently than direct resume submissions to individual job openings. Ten job search engines merit special consideration for their site functionality and effectiveness in matching job openings with companies who are looking to hire. Here are the Top 10: 10) TheLadders. For well-compensated execs seeking $100K+ jobs, TheLadders is the preferred website for the job search. TheLadders charges users $30 per month or $180 annually. For the fee, users gain unlimited access to thousands of high-paying executive jobs pre-screened recruiters. 9) Craigslist. The popular Craigslists is good not only for buying and selling stuff, it's also good to use for a job search. From the Craigslist home page, click the applicable city, then click the applicable job category under the jobs column. 8) USAJobs. USAJobs is the official job search website for U.S. Government hiring in all 50 states. The person considering needs to study how to apply for jobs in the Federal Government as the process is completely different than in the private sector. 7) Thingamajob. It is easy to search for a job by state, city, category, or keywords using Thingamajob. Also, Thingamajob's Career Center displays helpful articles on resume tips, IT careers, and career transition and relocation advice. 6) Yahoo! HotJobs. Yahoo! HotJobs is an easy to use job search engine that also provides users with career articles, interviewing tips, advice, salary information, and more. Yahoo! HotJobs' networking feature and resume writing tips are helpful as well. 5) Indeed. A very simplified job search, simply type the job title in the What field, the location in the Where field, and click the Find Jobs button to begin searching. Indeed is a metasearch job search engine that searches across other job sites, newspapers, associations, and corporate career pages. 4) Dice. For the informationtechnology professional, Dice is a great place to post a resume. Not only does Dice offer super-fast application to new job openings, they send out job matches daily. It is very common for information technology companies and recruiters to cold-call candidates if they have available matching job openings. 3) CareerBuilder. CareerBuilder is one of the original job search engines on the web and features an easy to use search, job advice, resume posting, job alerts, and job recommendations. CareerBuilder's skills training is helpful as well and increases marketability (fees apply). 2) SimplyHired. SimplyHired is also a very simplified job search. Like Indeed, it is a metasearch job search engine that searches thousands of other job search engines and companies. SimplyHired is very effective and has received much attention in the media. 1) Monster. The secret to Monster's success lies not only in its easy to use job search, but also in the wide array of additional features including job tools, customization, job advice, resume building tips, and resume posting. All job seekers should post their resume on Monster as it is the most widely used jobs database by employers. The key to using these Top 10 job search engines is posting a resume to as many sites as possible. It's a lot of work, but it will result in a greater chance of landing that perfect job.
