How To Get A Firefighter Job

Let me give you a brief overview of what it takes to become a firefighter.  You are pursuing the most rewarding career in the world.  I will take you step through step how the hiring selection process works.

If you are serious about pursing a career in the fire service, you must be dedicated to a lengthy process. Firefighting is ranked as one of the best jobs, and rewarding at that. As a veteran firefighter with experience in small and large fire departments. I have been exactly where you are now. I want to discus with you some of my experiences throughout my hiring process, and some tips on giving you that high score.

The first step towards a career in the fire service, is to locate the agencies you are interested in working for. You can do this by looking in newspapers, city websites, employment websites, and there are excellent online memberships that track all fire departments that are hiring.

Standard Requirements

Then once you narrow your search down, you must then find out if you meet the minimum qualifications. They all vary from department to department, most recommend:

  • Age, no less than 18, no more than 37
  • U.S citizen
  • Valid Drivers License
  • H.S. Diploma or GED
  • Firefighter & EMT Certification (EMT-Paramedic Preferred)
  • 15 – 60 College semester credits, can be substituted with full-time military service with honorable discharge

Keep in mind that these are standard requirements. Many agencies have lower requirements and some have higher requirements. That is your job to find out what the specific requirements are. Even if they dont require you to be certified as a Firefighter or EMT, you may receive extra points and move up on the eligibility list.

Hiring Selection Process

Again, the process varies from department to department; here are some of the phases you may have to complete

  • Application Process
  • Written Exam
  • Physical Agility Test
  • Medical exam including polygraph and physiological exam
  • Background Investigation
  • Oral Board Interview

The written exam is usually the most important, because this is the first phase, a high score will get you ranked high at the beginning of the process. Most importantly if you fail any of the tests, you will immediately be removed from the process.

Recommendations

To succeed in the firefighter hiring process you must be prepared and confident. You should invest in some firefighter study guides for the written exam. Some agencies will actually distribute guides for their entry-level exams. You must begin a physical training program so that you will be ready when the physical agility test comes. From my past experiences one of the most important phases of the process is your interview. If you have poor interview skills, you must begin to work on them now. There are great study guides you can purchase online that will help you through every step of the process.

Stop by your local fire station or the agency you want to work for. These firefighters are your biggest resources. They will be delighted to answer any questions you have, and send you in the right direction.

1.  Make sure that your resume is as good as it possibly can be by getting free help

Hiring managers and recruiters are inundated with an unbelievable amount of resumes on a daily basis.  It is estimated that each job posting gets between 100 to 500 applications from job seekers.  If your resume does not stand out from the crowd you have no chance of being considered for the job.  With companies offering free help to optimize resumes and job search campaigns it is amazing that all professionals do not take advantage.

4.  Network, Network, Network

It is estimated that 50% to 60% of available jobs are not published.  This is why it is imperative to utilize social networking sites.  You may not know the decision makers working for the major companies in which you are seeking a job, but you can connect to and then receive or exchange vital communications from or with them in a matter of hours.  I suggest the big three. — Linkedin, Twitter, Facebook

5.  Consider Freelance / Contract Work

In today’s economy more and more companies are looking to independent contractors, otherwise known as Freelancers, as a viable source of labor.  Jobs that are accomplished by these professionals range from data entry and basic accounting to the design and launch of corporate online operations.
