There’s always a point in our mind when we have seen a job description and say “I can do that”, knowing we don’t have the necessary experience or training to qualify for it. We send in our resumes and then get denied or never hear back from them. This is why companies are getting better with job descriptions as they state exactly what they want in a certain job position.

You need to understand the who, what, where and when of the job description. Who: you should know something about this company. Are they reputable, have they been in business long and would you fit in with this kind of work? What: the duties, responsibilities, qualifications and pay, time, days or nights, they are asking for. Where: know their location whether it is close to your home or within a reasonable driving distance. Where in the company is the position asking you to work; in filing, in mechanical, or in management? When: how soon will the job be available and the date when you will be starting your work?

If you read through a position description and you’re asking yourself “I don’t know what this job description means”, then you should move on. Apparently you don’t have the required qualifications for those certain jobs so don’t waste your time. Even a poorly written job description would have enough information that an experienced person should understand. Some job descriptions are very brief like the ones you see in a newspaper advertisement. It may be necessary to call them and get the full description. This will be a very important call. If you know that this job fits your qualifications, then this conversation will give you valuable information that you will be able to use in your resume as your key guides. This is recommended for every job you apply for.

Job descriptions may require that you must have a certification, license or training in a specialty, which can lead to further your education. If you are unemployed, this is a great time to get this extra education. Call your local job service and see if they will help paying for the classes you need. Go to a local community college and see what they have to offer. A variety of choices can be made from computer courses, medical transcription, to truck driving, all are in big demand.

Look up for a sample job descriptions for your work experience. See if you can create a job description about you and your work. This will provide you a better understanding of what you should be looking for in a job search and this will help you when you do find that job. You can use this to your advantage though by having the requirements or not wasting too much time on this particular job. You can use the 60% rule, wherein if you have sixty percent experience in the job posting, then you will apply for this job. All you need is a piece of luck and a ton of determination in finding the job that fits you.

I have worked in Newport, and the spring and fall can be a great time to find a job. The reason why; many of the seasonal jobs in Newport are filled by college students, teachers and foreign students with work vistas from countries such as  Russia & Ireland and others. These students and teachers usually cannot be at work until a week after school lets out for summer break. These same workers usually have to leave before Labor Day weekend to head back to school.  This leaves most Newport business owners scrambling to find workers to cover those positions.

Since Newport has many off season festivals and other activities, visitors to the City By The Sea are fairly steady in the off season.  Newport employers need people to work weekends and some weekday shifts during these busy weekends. Working in Newport in the off season has another, plenty of free parking!

This is your window of opportunity to find a job in Newport. Get your foot in the door, and chances are you will have a year round job. Even if you are collecting unemployment and working part time, you can still collect your unemployment benefit check.

You might also be able to make a working arrangement for temporary work with a local Newport business owner, or any business owner for that matter, with the understanding that you would be laid off at a later date. There are also other resources available if you are thinking of changing careers. I used to be a cook / chef and worked in Newport for years in the restaurant business. After hitting my 40’s I realized there was no way I could stay in the restaurant biz when I became older. Most restaurant owners like to higher younger people. Older Rhode Island restaurant professionals don’t have much of a future since there is so much competition from the younger professionals who will work cheaper and usually are more energenic.

I don’t regret leaving the restaurant business. I work from home now and make more money than I ever made in the restaurant biz.

I think the best salary I made as a chef in Rhode Island was 52k a year. 52K a year is now chump change to me now.  I got into internet marketing and love it and make real money. Many people might say 52k is good money. What they don’t know is that chefs work 55 to 75 hour work weeks for that 52k a year salary. No overtime pay either. Even if you worked a 65 hour work week you make $15.35 an hour. Hardly the hourly wage a professional chef should be paid.

Internet marketing has transformed my life and future in such a short time. I went from working in my Chefs uniform making decent income to working in my PJ’s and earning a future.

It’s easy and cheap to start an online business if you have the right tools. I didn’t have a clue a while back about this business, but now I am a believer. It’s official: We are in a recession. People have lost their jobs in droves and are suddenly finding themselves in the clutches of unemployment. While it’s not a desired situation to be in, unemployment (with or without a recession) offers unspoken opportunities that most people don’t capitalize on because they are either dejected or traumatized by their circumstances.

This article offers tips on the most important work you need to do while looking for your next job.

LET IT GO: The first and most significant task of your new work responsibilities is mentally and emotionally detaching from your last job to prepare you for the process of finding a new one. Many people make the mistake of letting their jobs and job titles define them. Once they are stripped away they are left with nothing. The result is that they feel like nothing. The sooner you let go of attachments and/or the residual emotions that are associated with your job loss, the sooner you can focus on the immediate task of getting hired elsewhere. Remember, you did not lose your job; your job lost you.

RECLAIM YOUR POWER: Employment is empowerment. It’s experienced through the ability to generate income to satisfy debts, needs, and desires. While this ability is diminished to varying degrees when you don’t have a job, you must realize that your new power lies within your ability to handle your impending adversities. You will need to be strong, positive, and determined to travel down the tough and potentially long road of unemployment.

REINVENT YOURSELF: Once your job and title are stripped away, you are free to assume a new title and position if you so choose. Many job searchers compulsively seek employment in the same fields, with identical or similar responsibilities. Take advantage of this opportunity to reinvent yourself professionally. Reassess your skills, talents, and career goals. Was your last job fulfilling? Seek additional training or education if necessary. It’s a great time to pursue the position you really want, or employment with the company that you’ve always wanted to work for. Your new job is looking for a better job.

KEEP A SCHEDULE: Creating – and sticking to – a schedule will help you to get the most out of your days of unemployment. This schedule should include allocated time for your job search, resume creation and distribution (at least 10 per week), meeting with recruiters/agencies, and networking. In addition, you should keep a detailed log of all job postings you’ve responded to (cut them out or copy and paste them into a file), a to-do list which should have deadlines and instructions for follow-up assignments, and upcoming job fairs.

PRACTICE AGGRESSIVENESS: The saying, “the man who doesn’t have a chance, is the man who never takes a chance,” is true. While you may be as qualified and experienced as those who are competing for the same jobs as you are, in a down economy where employers are inundated by resumes, the person who aggressively pursues employment often gets it. This could be calling to confirm receipt of a resume; sending a thank you note after an interview; or just showing up in-person to make an introduction.

EXERCISE REGULARLY: When you were working you were too busy to get in shape. What’s your excuse now? There is none. Exercise is therapeutic and provides a much needed release from the anger and frustration that can mount in a prolonged job search. Put exercise on your new work schedule and commit to getting into the best shape of your life to ward off latent stress and depression.

POSITIVITY READING: Buy or check out from your local library books by top motivational speakers to nurture your spirits. Many are filled with uplifting stories about people who were challenged by adversities in their lives (just like you) who were able to overcome them and achieve success beyond their expectations; which is what you aspire to do in spite of how your situation may look or feel.

HAVE FAITH: You can’t force fate and you can’t escape destiny. You will eventually get the job that you are meant to have, at the time you are meant to have it. Having faith means believing in something for which there is no proof. At times it will seem as though your resumes are being sent into thin air, but they are not. View and approach your new work as an adventure and an opportunity to learn how to effectively sell yourself. With perseverance, and by executing the work action items above, you will eventually put yourself in a position for your next job to find you.
