If you are over the age of 50 and are actively seeking a new job you may have noticed that it is harder than you ever remember finding a job. You may have heard terms such as you are overqualified and the like but what it all boils down to is that many 30 something year olds don’t want to hire someone who reminds them of their parents.

If you are finding it increasingly difficult to interview, fear not, there is hope for you yet to land a great job and age has nothing to do with it. Basically it is all in how you present yourself. Here is how you too can improve your chances in an interview even if you are over 50:

• Sell Yourself: When in an interviewer it is important to try to sell yourself by giving yourself a brand image. This will address the ever important question that all interviewers ask themselves, ‘What’s in it for me?’ This brand image should be summarized in a few short sentences and address the issues of who you are, what your biggest strengths are, and most importantly what you bring to the table.

• Show Passion: Never have the attitude that you are desperate for work and instead approach the interview as though this is something you have wanted to do your whole life. If you show that you are indeed passionate about learning and working it will convey your commitment as a hard worker and will likely garner more good than bad.

• Down Play the Long Term: Many employers today are looking for a quick fix to their employee problems and are not really interested in how long you plan on staying with the company. Instead of harping on the fact that you are a long term player, harp on your skills and show the potential employer how you can be the quick fix they are looking for. Worry about your longevity at the company later; just get your foot in the door first.

• Don’t Talk too Much: Because you have worked in the ‘field’ for so many generations you undoubtedly have many wonderful sorties to share, but the interview may not be the best place to do so. Stick to answering what is asked of you and save your stories for the water cooler after you get the job.

• Talk Money: There is saying that money talks; it actually screams. Money trumps everything including your age so make sure that you convey to the potential employer what you can do for the money you expect. Bottom line is, that if you offer more bang for their buck then they probably won’t care how old you are.

Finding a job at any age can be a real challenge and the challenge only gets tougher as your age progresses. But if you approach an interview with a sound strategy using the tips provided you can have the potential employer thinking more about your skills and how those skills can help the company than they are thinking about your age.

If you are able to know the traits of various types of the interviewers and how to handle them during the course of interview, the following tips will be useful to you.

1. The friendly: They will greet you with a smile, shower praises, joke and make you comfortable. They will talk a lot and make you at ease. You may be an Engineer with a specialization – say in Electronics. So, by becoming a friendly interviewer he may be hiding his particular knowledge or he will like to exert his pressure to open you up. Many interviewees commit mistakes seeing their friendly behaviour and open up too much amid the interview and in the process lose the chance to win the game. You may have to keep your patience and ensure to open up within the limit.

2. The pernickety: Interviewers are very wise and they will bombard you with questions for answers even for basic principles of any subjects. So, if you are not thorough with your subject knowledge, you will not be able to take the pressure.

3. The less attentive: These types of interviewers conduct interview in the midst of their routine functions. 6. The eccentric: These are less talkative, inquisitive, broad faced and an unpleasant type. Mostly you confront with this type in senior level interview. But at times based on the need, they become the interviewer even for GET level interview. By and large, their appearance ripples nervousness as soon as you enter the room albeit with your brimming confidence. They ask you point blank and mostly dichotomous.

They also prefer to have straight forward reply with statistics. Any kind of unwanted reply will fluster them. So, if you happen to be greeted by this type of interviewer, chances will be remote to satisfy them, but sometimes “lady luck” may rescue you.

When you understand the different types of interviewers, you can suitably adjust your approach and provoke your thought process in line with theirs, but of course, that does not come overnight. After attending a few interviews, courage and conviction levels go up and you will also be able to make a judgement to score the goal at the appropriate time that means you will be successful to be awarded with the job.

How to answer Illegal Interview Questions

Federal and state laws world wide prohibit potential employers from asking certain questions that are not directly related to the job they are hiring for. Examples of illegal questions include: Race, Color, Sex, Religion, National origin, Birthplace, Age, Disability, Marital/family status

But the question is how do you handle this type of question when you’re being interviewed?

The interview process is hard enough without having to dodge your way through illegal questions.

Refusing to answer the question or becoming angry at the interviewer will probably cost you the chance of getting the job (However do you want to work at this type of company?)

My advice is to answer the INTENTION of the question. You need to understand and be aware of what the interviewer is really trying to find out. You need to measure the motive behind the question and if you believe the question to be “innocent” then go on the offensive with your response.

Example:

Question: Are you a U.S. citizen” (illegal question) 

Now what is the intent of this question? Is the interviewer discriminating against non US residents or are they just making sure you are authorized to work in the USA?

If the intent of the question is finding out if I am authorized to work in the USA my answer would be:  “I am legally allowed and approved to work in the United States”

If you’re interviewing for a job which has long hours and overtime – The interviewer asks you “your marital status”. Again it’s important to figure out the intent of the question. Are they asking you this question on a malicious intent (which is illegal and thus should be reported) or is the question intended because of the long hours? If you believe it’s because of the long hours my answer would be: “I am available to work the hours required including overtime and weekends”

Just remember – Not all interviewers are even aware that they have asked an illegal question. Instead of getting defensive or angry take a moment to realise what the intention of the question is and answer accordingly. Even in this type of situation you can turn an inappropriate question to your advantage by showing the interviewer you’re an intelligent and composed person
