Choosing The Right Career Is Not As Hard As You Might Think

   Choosing the right career is not a very difficult thing to do if you follow a systematic approach. There are several factors that you have to take into account in order to decide the most suitable profession for you. The popular misconception is that it is just about money. It is not so. Job satisfaction is more important that income. Therefore, besides looking into the income prospects, you should consider your interests and skills as well. If you do not love what you do, but you are still doing it because it is paying you good money, you will not be able to achieve happiness in your work. You will have a boring professional life, which will eventually have an adverse effect on your personal life. So, it is always worth spending some time to do a thorough research before you make a commitment and go ahead on a certain career path.

   Your Knowledge, Interests, And Skills

   The first thing that you have to keep in mind is the kind of knowledge and skills you have. Do you have interest in the profession you are considering? Do you have the knowledge and skills that it requires? Are you willing to pursue additional courses to acquire the specific qualifications needed for that job? How much money do you need to invest to acquire additional qualifications? Can you afford such courses? The point is to choose a profession that allows you to do what you enjoy and enjoy what you do. For example, if you have flair for preparing food, you had better choose a career in catering, not engineering.

   Explore Different Possibilities In A Specific Field

   Always remember, there is a world of possibilities out there. No matter which field of profession you choose, you will have an extensive array of options. Once you choose the right field of profession for you, the next big thing is to look into the options that it provides to you. For example, catering does not always mean a hotel job. You can find a catering job in cruise ship also, where you will not only be getting a much better salary package, but also an opportunity to travel to different places and meet people from different countries and culture. This is just a small example. The point is that there are endless possibilities even in a single career field. So, if you spend some time in seriously looking into the options available out there, it should not be very difficult for you to choose a profession, where you can get both job satisfaction and a good income.

How (And When) To Approach Your Company’s Competitor For A Job

Let’s say that for some time, you’ve been thinking about a job at a fantastic, well-run company. You’re positive that this company has everything you look for in a great place to work. However, there’s only one problem, the company is your employer’s direct competition.

While this can seem difficult and dangerous, it’s fine to go for a job with a competitor except in certain circumstances. But just to make sure that you approach the situation appropriately, let’s take a look at a few tips to help you move in the direction of your current employer’s competition for a job.

 

Find Out Whether You’ve Signed a CNC

Your first issue with approaching a competitor of your employer is to know whether you’ve signed a non-compete clause, also known as a covenant-not-to-compete (CNC). Often times, it’s difficult to know everything that you signed when you were thrust a ton of papers during your orientation, which is why it’s that much more important that you dig through them to see if you’re contractually prohibited from working with direct competition.

If you discover that you have signed a CNC, this is the time to read the terms of the contract. A common condition states that you need to be out of employment with your current company for a year before signing a new contract with a direct competitor. Some contracts require more or less time. If you feel that your CNC doesn’t offer a fair time period, you may need to consult with a lawyer who specializes in employment law. In any case, it’s very important to pay attention to the CDC agreement portion of your contract if you end up signing on with the prospective employer.

 

Make Special Adjustments to Your Resume

When developing your resume for a competitor, you want to make sure you’re as discreet as possible. In other words, you may want to leave off some things that you could be penalized for later. You definitely don’t want to bad talk your current employer in any way. Also, you don’t want to include specifics in your accomplishments that could point to competition with the new employer. You want to show respect for both sides.

As for how much information to disclose about your current employer, it’s a good idea to disclose as little as possible. On your resume in the spot where you would list the company name, you might replace your company’s actual name with “Company Confidential” while noting that the company is in the prospective employer’s marketplace. You might also note that you’re not under a CNC in this area, as it will make the hiring manager less apprehensive about bringing you in for an interview.

There is no doubt that a competitor could hire you; in fact, some companies enjoy luring employees away from their competition. However, if you’re lucky enough to get hired into a better position with a better company, you still may want to walk on egg shells for a while – not mentioning your previous employer unless necessary. You don’t want to burn the bridge you just crossed since you may one day have to cross back over it.
