Fastest Growing Career Fields

January 14th, 2010

Whether you are just entering the workforce or you are a seasoned pro who is looking for a change of pace, it helps to know what the fastest growing career fields are. Entering a fast growing career field means that you will have plenty of room for advancement and that your job will not be in danger of going anywhere any time soon.

While the list of fast growing career fields seems to be subject to change with every passing year, there are some fields that appear to be standing the test of time and are consistently making all the top job lists. These career fields include:

• Health Care: As the baby-boomers begin to show their age the demand for health care will be steadily increasing. Registered nurses are typically at the front of the line when it comes to top job openings in the field, but the future will bring the need for many areas of medicine. While many positions in the health care industry do require a lot of schooling, others simply require a two-year degree or less.

• Technology: Because the world of technology is always changing there will always be new career opportunities for those who are tech savvy. What is common place today such as cellular phones and lap top computers were taboo not 25 years ago. The future will inevitably always be bringing more technologies to the forefront and those who get involved early will probably be best rewarded.

• Law Enforcement: The needed increase in law enforcement is unfortunately a product of our environment. With the threat of terror attacks and crime on the rise due to poor economic conditions, many openings will be available in the law enforcement area. From homeland security, to prison guard, and everything in between each will carry a heavy weight of responsibility but will also help to keep the country and local communities safe.

• Science: Thanks in large part to technology, science will probably find its way on this list more times than not. New advances in genetics and other areas of high tech science will create a multitude of opportunities for those with an analytical mind.

• Education: As the populating seems to be making a comeback and there are now more children in daycare then in recent history then it stands to reason that once those children reach the age to attend elementary school, there will be an increased need for teachers. If you are not interested in becoming a teacher, there will be other area such as teacher’s aides, special education assistants, and physical education instructors that will also need to be addressed by the school system in America.

While each job on the list represents its own set of standards and requirements, they also represent terrific opportunities to get into a field that is rapidly advancing now and will more than likely be advancing in the future as well. As the years go on and new job markets come and go, these jobs will always have a need to be filled and can give you a great career that will not soon fade away.

CardiologyJob Outlook 2010

January 1st, 2010

At one point, people believed that too many cardiologists and specialists were being trained to keep up with the shrinking number of jobs. However, a study conducted by the ACC revealed that all graduate fellows found a position and typically continued with a goal in medical practice. There are over 25,000 members in the American College of Cardiology.

Employment of physicians and surgeons is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations. Cardiology jobs opportunities should be very good, especially for cardiologists willing to practice in specialties in rural and low-income areas where there is a greater shortage of medical practitioners.  Opportunities for cardiologists vary depending on geographical location. As with most medical specialties, there are fewer job openings in large cities or other desirable locations. However, San Diego currently has a shortage of cardiologists and has many job openings.

Overall, a Cardiologist salary is based on years of experience, specialty, geographic location, the type of facility. Medical Group Management Association states the mean salaries for cardiologists are $400,000 for non-invasive cardiology jobs, $450,000 for invasive cardiology jobs and $540,000 for interventional cardiologists.

According to a study by the American Medical Association, a large portion of a cardiologist’s salary comes from incentives and bonuses, which are related to contributions to income and net revenues.

Growing Demand Shrinking Supply

The US is aging.  Between 2010 and 2035, all age groups 70 and above will increase over 95%. This means there will be a greater demand for all health care services and relatively smaller younger population of physicians taking the retiring physicians place . Further, it is estimated that as many as one-third of today’s practicing physicians will retire by 2020.   However, the recession and massive job loss across the country has had a direct impact on the revenue stream to physicians. When people lose their job, they also lose their health care benefits and so access to healthcare.

The recent stock market collapse has had a major impact on older physicians’ decisions. Some physicians are postponing retirement because of the economy’s impact on their retirement savings. But even a three- to five-year delay won’t address the impending loss of experienced physicians.

Health Insurance Reform

Another uncertainty is the outcome of national health reform.  If the reform actually works in increasing the enrollment into health care insurance programs  then when combined with the long term the aging population and these increased numbers should push demand for services and therefore cost higher. However, no one yet knows what will happen to reimbursement rates from Medicare and this new program.  The question is will there be rate a cut of reimbursement rates for different procedures by Medicare and this new program that may ultimately decrease the income of all specialties.

Because of these and other factors many physician practices are holding off making any decisions until they have a better idea of how the health reform will impact these reimbursements.

Robert Truog founded of Physemp.com in 1994 as one of the first online physician employment sites.

Job Descriptions Are Vital in Resumes

January 1st, 2010

A job description on a resume is a key spot were many job hunters fall short. A job description is not a cut and dry area; it is an important spot on a resume that should be modified to each type of job applied for. To ensure that human resources department is attracting qualified and appropriate candidates for job openings, write accurate and detailed job descriptions. By supplying more information on the job details, you’ll find that you get more qualified for the position you are applying for.

The best job description should be detailed but straightforward. Communicating honestly and clearly in the job description will create qualified applicants. Individual job descriptions require modification; however, an effective template will make the process easier. Job descriptions are one of the most significant tools in your job hunt. Becoming acquainted with the skills, duties, responsibilities and pay, associated with a particular position, can give you a discrete gain when choosing a career. Write your resume clearly and understandably and get to be interviewed by a potential employer.

In writing the best job description for your resume, you should begin with determining your job title. Job titles differ from each career field, even if the job is similar. You will want to use the terms best used for the job you’re applying for. Beneath the job title, give at least two important accomplishments or responsibilities of the job; no more than six. The most current job should have the most detail, while past jobs should be straighter to the point.

Combine both accomplishments and responsibilities with your job description. Be direct with your accomplishments and back up what was stated. For instance, instead of saying “was the best sales associate”, you may rather say “Rewarded Salesman of the Months 6 times.” Be selective and do not keep the same old job description for each resume sent. There is a hundred ways to describe the same job and the hiring manager will not spend all day deciding if what you have written in your job experience will fit their needs. For example, a salesman applying for a job in data entry would point out more of his computer job duties than he would if he was applying for another sales job. Prioritize your job description. Never make a mistake that just because it is on your resume does not mean the hiring manger will have time to read it. The hiring manger will probably only skim resumes till he finds applicants that appear to meet the companies’ needs. So if the experience in a job task is important in getting the job, then list the task at the beginning. List all tasks in order from the most important to the least important.

The best job descriptions are important to include in your resumes. The employer will most likely to seek for all you qualifications in your application so place all your winning cards and you will definitely get into the game.
