What’s it really like teaching English in Taiwan? Many people make the move to Taiwan to teach but they don’t come fully prepared. This isn’t their fault as Taiwan and the way of life is very different from what most people are used to. A few things you should know in advance is how you are treated as a teacher and what is expected from you. There are many different kinds of English schools in Taiwan, but the majority are known as cram schools. These cram schools are where most teachers work and while they may have different names, they all operate pretty much in the same way. They provide classes for children to learn English as there is a large market of parents wanting their children to improve their English.

The first rule is that you need to keep the children happy. Education is second to happy students. Happy students mean money for the school. If you are a teacher that is excellent as teaching but not so good with the children, be warned. Cram schools are a business and money is their priority with educating children second. Some schools may place a lot of emphasis on education but at the end of the day they are a business that earns money by providing classes for children. If children are unhappy, they will leave and the school will make no money. Being a good teacher and keeping your class happy are two very different things. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t teach well, but keep in mind that your boss will probably start to ask questions if children start complaining or leaving your classes.

English teachers in Taiwan are disposable. If you work at a cram school or kindergarten, be aware that you basically have no negotiating power. You may be able to ask for and get some minor concessions, but if you cause too much trouble or are always demanding things, you’ll be shown the door by simply not being asked to resign your contract when it runs out. There is a large supply of teachers in Taiwan but only a certain amount of demand. This means that you would be best to do what you are told, smile and nod your head. Teachers that complain can be replaced very easily and quickly as there is an almost endless supply of university graduates coming from the USA, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia each year.

Teaching English in Taiwan can be a challenge if you don’t accept the fact that you are a commodity that can be bought and sold. Education is important at cram schools but since they are a business the most important thing is their bottom line. If your classes think you are only an average teacher and they don’t express any great interest in you, there is a chance you’ll just be asked to not re-sign. You may also find that you are asked not to re-sign if you constantly complain or demand for pay increases and other job related matters. Teaching in Taiwan can be fun and rewarding as long as you know what it is really like.

Without enough hours teaching English in Taiwan, you will find it hard to make a living. It is true that teachers get paid decently, but if you aren’t working enough hours or you find that your daily living expenses are higher than you had planned, if you aren’t working enough hours you’ll probably find it difficult to save any moreny. Another question is also how many hours do you want to teach? Some people want a lot of hours while others only want a few. What number of hours do schools usually give teachers? All of these factors and more can make a huge impact on the kind of class hours you’ll get and how much money you’ll make each month. Some people come to Taiwan wanting as many hours as possible, while others just want the bare minimum because they plan on doing other things. Regardless of your motives for moving to Taiwan, there is a minimum number of hours a school has to give English teachers.

The minimum hours you can expect to work is 14 hours per week. This is because the law states that in order to apply for a work permit and all the other papers you must be teaching at least 14 hours a week. Some schools will offer you much more than this, while others will give you the absolute minimum of 14 hours. Is this enough for you? That depends on why you are thinking about teaching in Taiwan. If you want to save money then this won’t be enough once you deduct what it costs to live, but if you have other plans then 14 hours is a good benchmark to know how much time you’ll have available to pursue your other interests.

The absolute maximum number of hours you can work is a total of 32 hours a week. This is much less than what you might be working right now back home and many people with day jobs are used to working this or even more each week. The reason 32 hours is the maximum is because this is law and working anymore than this technically violates that law. Obviously many teachers work more than this, but a school will only be able to give you a maximum of 32 hours a week. Considering the cost of living in Taiwan, this should provide an opportunity to be able to save money and is most likely more than enough teaching hours for many people.

The average number of hours you can expect to work as an English teacher in Taiwan is around 20 hours per week. This might be good for you and you don’t need anymore hours, but for many people it probably won’t be enough, especially if you are married. Some schools will only be able to offer you the minimum of 14 and some may be able to offer up to 30 a week. Be aware that it is rare to find schools offering the maximum load of hours, and most will promise anywhere from 14 – 24 hours per week.

If there was a way that I could choose to one day work my dream job, I would take the opportunity in a heartbeat. My ultimate dream job is to be a Hollywood actress. Ever since I was a small child, I have been fascinated with the fact that people are able to show their faces on a television screen and earn money for it. Every time I would watch a movie or a television show, I would always act out a scene I remembered from it after it had finished. When I would take the time to show my family and friends my acting, they would tell me that I was wonderful. Of course that is what happens when you are younger. As I got older, acting still consumed me. I loved participating in plays at school and church and I never missed an opportunity to amuse an audience. If you were to ask anyone who knows me, they would tell you that I am a born entertainer and that the world is my stage. I am never afraid of a crowd and I always make myself comfortable around groups of people. I recently participated in my school’s Shakespeare Festival and loved it. Every night we had an awesome audience. After the festival, many people came up to me and told me that I did an excellent job. There were quite a few people that told me that I should be an actress. When I heard that, I knew even more that I loved acting. It is a great comfort to love something and have others tell you that you do well in it. One actor that I worked with in the festival told me that I was one of the best he had ever seen. I admire him because he is a very good actor and his opinion means a lot to me.

Acting to me has always been a type of release for me. I love to write to express my feelings and it serves as a form of therapy for me, but acting is a way to show so much emotion without anyone realizing that it may actually be real. Again, acting is just one of those things that has always interested me and every time I take part in it, I get positive feedback.

To be a Hollywood actress would be the most wonderful experience of my life. Of course it would take a lot of hard work to make it happen, but I am willing to do anything. Acting is definitely my dream job and I know that if I were to become an actress, I would enjoy it thoroughly.

I am not one bit surprised that so many people want to work from home with their computer. I mean why not? The main tool you need you probably already own, a computer with an internet connection.

Your hours are flexible allowing you to work when you want. This gives you the feeling of freedom. Just imagine being able to stay up as late as you want knowing you can sleep in as long as you like.

This is the lifestyle you can live when you work from home with your computer. What a sense of freedom this can leave you with compared to having a certain time to get up and fight your way through traffic to get to work. Then, having to stay at work all day and fight through traffic to get back home again. Get up the next morning and do it all over again. Day after day having to put up with the same ritual.

Many people wonder is it really possible or just a myth being able to work from home with your computer. I hope I can brighten your day when I tell you many people are already doing it.

How do they do it, you may ask? There are so many different ways, that I myself probably haven’t heard of all them. The thing is, you have to do the research yourself and find an idea you would be interested in.

I will mention several methods that will give you who are totally new to having an internet business an idea about what I am talking about. These are not things I just thought up in my head as I am writing this. There are people out there making a fortune using these methods.

People start an internet business with such things as:

•Selling items on ebay

•enlisting people in training or coaching programs (teaching others what they know) Eg. Marketing, SEO, knitting. I mentioned knitting just to let you know it doesn’t have to be about business. Your imagination is your limit.

•MLM (multi level marketing programs)

•Creating an ebook (not as hard as you may think)

•Creating other types of products (again not as hard as you might think)

Let me give you an example of a work from home with your computer scenario. First thing you have to do is wake up. The time you get up depends totally upon you. You then may wish to read the newspaper, have some breakfast, jog, exercise or whatever else you may want to do.

A few holes of golf is certainly not out of the question. What I am trying to get through to you is, you work whatever hours you work the best. It can even be 9, 10 or 11 o’clock in the night. I’ve seen myself up at 4 in the morning, not because I had to, because thats when I enjoyed doing what I had to do.

I myself work best when everyone has gone to sleep. I just seem to think better at that time. Sometimes I feel like writting an article early in the morning. It’s totally up to me and I do not have to fight through traffic to do it.

I do have a plan or a system that I stick to, which keeps my work from home business on track. Lets face it, the more you work the more you get out of it. Its a real nice feeling when the money starts rolling in and keeps rolling in a steady flow.

Your probably asking yourself, how do I get started with a work from home with your computer job. As I stated earlier you have to come up with an idea that you want to get started with. Then you need to execute that idea. You need a plan or a system that is going to make it easy for you.

Lets say, out of the ideas I mentioned earlier, you wanted to start an affiliate marketing business. A very good choice I may add. Probably because that is my personal favorite. It does not have to be yours.

First thing you have to pick a market your interested in. Then you need to pick a product that is a winner. Next you have to market that product. You may have to write a bunch of articles, Oh my god, I can’t write an article you frown! Not that hard when you have an idea on how to go about it. Its all a learning curve you need to go through. Believe me when I say its well worth it.

Most people start a work from home with your computer type of business because of the freedom that comes with it. Also because of the low start up cost. The financial benefits can well exceed most paying jobs that are out there. It does take time and commitment at first but the benefits make it all worth it. It does get much easier as you go through the learning curve and learn to automate things.

You must be devoted and have the patience to become successful. Many people fall short there and never know what it’s like to become successful.

Many people are nay-sayers, and skeptics at heart. They say, “that can’t happen to me, that is a bunch of ___.” The truth is, they are scared, they would rather put up a front than actually see the possibility for themselves to earn six figures.

I feel sad for them. They will go through life just watching, not actually taking action on a possibility. As a lifelong entrepreneur who has seen six figures several times, my word of advise is “you have to believe”. You have to have a small sense that you deserve it. You nurture it, and it will grow into reality.

We found that when we discovered the heart of why we wanted to earn six figures, taking the action to get it was easy. Our why is our children and family all over the world. We have a lifestyle that gives us freedom to work from anywhere in the world and earn the income we desire.

You have to find your why. You have to dig deep into what you want for yourself and your family. You will have to be brave, and trust their is a way.

I ask you, “What if you passed up your opportunity to earn six figures?” You will never know if you don’t take action. Watching will never allow you to earn six figures, that is a promise. You deserve it, go get it. To earn six figures, you have to decide you will get it, you find the opportunity, and you make it happen.
