CEO Casual: The New Powersuit

January 25th, 2010

 Powered by Max Banner Ads

The Wall Street Journal published an article about Trevor Kaufman and Nick Worth, co-founders of Schematic, a digital-branding agency responsible for Target.com and some Nike ads. Despite having a number of big-time clients, Mr. Kaufman doesn’t prefer the old-school uniform for chief executives. Lawyers, finance people, salesmen and bridegrooms are usually expected to arrive in crisp suits. But when you’re in the field of creative or high-tech businesses, a suit can be seen as old-fashioned and out-of-sync.

CEO casual is seen mostly on young people, but not wearing a suit doesn’t cut it anymore. Although for most professionals who are still living in the dark ages, drabby clothes and the traditional suit still rule the boardroom. For people working in the creative industry such as advertising, in marketing, music or the entertainment industry, it’s all about presenting a modern, creative message. Well, it makes sense knowing that you’d be working with people who are in charge of product rebranding and presenting something creatively.

“When people wear suits in the music business, it feels like they’re not insiders,” says Anni Sarah Lam, CEO of Parc Landon, a Houston-based music, sports and entertainment agency with clients including rapper 50 Cent and David Beckham.

Crisp jeans, modern blazers, trendy jackets and made-to-measure shirts are replacing the old suit. Actually, the power lies within the individual’s ability to decide what he/she wants to wear and that corporate dress codes don’t apply anymore.

Your dress code speaks volumes about how you work, and so does your office space. Get fun office accessories to suit that CEO casual style!

The Origins of Casual Friday

January 15th, 2010

Casual Friday is a popular event in both America and Canada. It is also known as “Dress-down Friday” or “casual day.” This custom is basically the act of dressing down every Friday in the workplace. No heels, no ties, no pant suits, no collared shirts, no body kits. Some offices even have themed down day, such as Sports day or Christmas apparel. Typically, jeans, T-shirts, hoodies, and sneakers are allowed on casual Fridays. However, some offices are a bit more uptight and they require a “business casual” or what they call “smart casual.”

So where did this dressing down day come from? Well, the tradition began in the late 1950’s and it was invented as a way to raise a worker’s morale in the new white-collar environment. At that point, it was still widely unpopular, but in the 1970’s the production of cheap clothing in the United States caused the custom to spread. In fact, there were high budget campaigns by large clothing companies to make Casual Fridays a weekly event.

During the Dot Com era, or “hey day” of the late 1990’s/early 2000s there was also a an increase in companies taking advantage of Casual Fridays, particularly in the San Francisco Bay area for some reason. At this time, some companies were so relaxed that shorts and sandals were okay to wear to work. However, after the fizzle of the Dot-Com phenomenon, many companies decided to reinstate proper dress codes. One of the biggest backlash was Target in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 2004. After Labor Day weekend, they decided to require “business formal” dress and ban Casual Fridays for good.

Apply For a Job Now!

January 13th, 2010

Apply for a job now and get a leg up on the procrastinators. The 2010 year promises more of the same from 2009. The recession is not going to go away anytime soon. Time is of the essence if you truly want to solidify a position with some of these hard to get a job companies or areas. The pharmacy tech job is one job that I will be concentrating on this year. The United States health reform bill is going to extend insurance to some 1 million people that did not have it the year before. That will equate to more than 1 million prescriptions being filled this year that were not filled in 2009.

The Pharmacy tech job is the job that is the most obtainable in the field. There are some courses to take, but it is not degree type demanding. The salaries start in the area of about $14.00 per hour on the low end. The most remarkable thing about a job in pharmaceuticals as a tech, is that the job will also accompany for the most part a placement period in which the technical-vocational schools attempt to place you into a position with some of the more prominent and well known pharmacies. Pharmacies like Target Super Centers, Walgreens, Walmart, Eckerd Drugs, CVS pharmacies and many more. Additionally, do not discard or forget the mom and pop drug stores.

The key is to apply for a job now, do not wait. Nothing in life that is worth while comes easy, that includes a well paying job, which is more magnified in a rough economic recession like the one we are navigating through right now. Stay focused and get your job now.

Abu Dhabi Jobs – Starting Your Career in Abu Dhabi (Helpful Tips)

December 24th, 2009

Some specific Abu Dhabi jobs tips for someone having passed the resume building stages. These tips are catered specifically for someone wanting to land a job in Abu Dhabi.

Once you have a well presented resume, filled with your credentials on the area of your expertise, the next thing that you need to do is to fully start your career search. You can do this by first searching for job vacancies in your field, most likely through the help of recruitment agents.

Tips from Agencies in Abu Dhabi

Caution: You, as a job seeker should be aware of the various scams on the web where the agencies immediately ask for money upon submission of your curriculum vitae. Remember that this should not be the case. You should NEVER PAY FIRST for this does not coincide with the employment laws in the United Arab Emirates. Besides, real agents do not really ask for money from job seekers upon resume submission.

When you start sending resumes to recruitment agencies, the resumes most probably end up in the garbage despite your efforts to present yourself well on paper. This is because these agencies receive a lot of resumes on a daily basis that they really don’t have all the time to review all the resumes that are being submitted to them.

Worry not. Steps in successfully starting a career search in Abu Dhabi through the help of tips from recruitment agents can be found in this guide.

Step 1 – Find agencies which utilize online databases

Job agencies accept resumes in two common ways. The first is through uploading your resume or sending it to them through mail. This type of method is the one which results to resumes being dumped in the bin without being read. The second type of method and the one which gives you an advantage is through an online system where you get to fill in details for your resume. The latter type of method in resume acceptance should be your target when looking for job agencies to work with.

Agencies utilize an online database function in such a way that when they have a job vacancy to advertise, they simply search for qualified candidates through their database. With the use of keywords, they can easily find the perfect candidate for the job position that needs to be filled. These chosen applicants are then notified for interviews.

However, you may also note that these agencies still advertise their vacancies on websites or newspapers. When this happens, it means that the job agency has a lot of vacant job positions. You should always bear in mind that these agencies purchase space for advertisement in local newspapers for a year and they utilize the spaces that they buy by advertising the various job vacancies that they have.

Step 2 – Take advantage when you find an agency which utilizes an online database.

As mentioned earlier, the job applicants are searched based on keywords. You should take advantage of this method so you can always be part of the top search results.

Internet search engines such as Yahoo and Google work the same way as the search engines in the online databases of recruitment agents. The Google search engine for instance would list the sites which match the keyword that is typed in. In the same way, the database search engine shows the resumes from the database which matches the keyword that was searched by the agent specifically for the vacant job position that needs to be filled.

Sample situation:

There is vacancy for a financial analyst job and the qualifications for the job position include 5 years experience in the oil and gas industry as preferred by the employer.

The following keywords would be used by a job agent in his database search:

5 years experience

Oil Industry

Gas Industry

You can use this information for your own benefit.

First, all you need to do is list the possible keywords that an agent can use which is relevant to your working experience and your qualifications or credentials. For instance, you can say that you are an computer savvy, and that you have working experience of 5 years as a financial analyst using MS Excel, Access, SAP, etc. You have also worked in an Oil and Gas company. Thus, the following should be in your list of possible keywords:

Excel

Access

SAP

Computer

Oil Company

Gas Company

Oil and Gas

5 years

Then you should use these keywords when you are filling in the details of your online resume. In doing so, you’ll have a greater chance of coming up in top search results when these keywords are searched for by the agents in case a financial analyst job becomes available in the oil and gas industry. With such results, you are a step closer to landing an interview with the agency, the company and eventually getting the job.

You should remember however that not all jobs go to recruitment agencies and there are a lot of jobs in Abu Dhabi that are unadvertised and are waiting to be filled.

If you would like to read more about how to get an unadvertised job in Abu Dhabi, as well as specific step by step guidance to land Abu Dhabi jobs, I highly recommend reading the best selling Abu Dhabi Jobs guide.

Good luck to you in your job search.

                                                                                    *N.SATHIYA

An enterprise is an undertaking and enterpriser is one who organizes and manages it and takes risk. Initiative, risk bearing, co-ordinating of factors of production, use of innovation and provision of capital are the basic elements of entrepreneurship. Solutions, creation, processing and promotion of unit, promotional help, adequate and timely finance, sufficient market stability and intelligence are the main factors effective progress.

This is considered to be one of the most significant organizational changes taking place in the world today. However, though the number of women entering the managerial profession is on the increase they are still clustered in the lower levels of management and rarely obtain positions of significant corporate power. In difference countries where the entry and middle level management positions are held by a significant number of women, experience prove their effectiveness as managers.

CAREER DEVELOPMENT:

  1. The goals of women’s empowerment are to challenge patriarchal ideology to transform the structures and institutions that reinforce and perpetuate gender discrimination and social inequality and to enable poor women to gain access to and control over both material and information resources.

In operation vital and extensive employment and beneficiary oriented programmes for specific target groups like farmers, and artisans such as the:

1)      National Rural Employment Programming (NREP), the

2)      Integrated Rural Development  Programming (IRDP),the

3)      Rural landless Employment Guaranty Programming (RLEGP),the

4)      Training Scheme of Rural Youth for Self  Employment (TRYSEM)

5)      The Scheme for providing Self Employments to Educated Unemployed youth (SEEU)and

6)      Self Employment Programme for Urban Poor,(SEPUP)

Growth for Industrialization, Urbanization, Education and Democratic system in the country the custom-bound-society of India is in the process of a change. The women are searching gainful employment in different fields. In developing countries they invariably work harden than men. They contribute to economic actively and to the welfare of society through house hold jobs, child rearing, educating children and working in the fields. In developing countries, the discrimination extends to health care, food, property and access to credit.

Women’s organization aim at creating general awareness on the status involves roles, exception, entitlements rights and obligations etc. In many cases women are unaware of the legal rights, to take decisions and great influences by a family the dominance of the male. From 1980’s onwards, the issues raised by WOMEN IN DEVELOPMENT (WID) and, lately, GENDER AND DEVELOPMENT (GAD) approaches have acquire great importance, both for government organizations, non- government organizations and women’s organizations. While WID concentrates more on women’s economic activities.

We need to invest in our people and, especially, improve the lives our women we need contribution from our women to attain excellence in all areas of activity. Our social and cultural attitudes neglects and marginalize women. In public, we can accept and respect women and brag about having a woman as our Prime Minister or a few women’s as Chief Ministers and Judges. But privately, the large majorities of women are sub Jud gated and dominated. They need permission from their men to occasionally visit their parents and relatives. It is estimated that 124 million women work in India (National Sample Survey Organization, 2000). This represents about 31 percent of the total work force. The Government economic survey for 2003-04 has estimated that there are 4.95 million women in the organized sector (both public and private sectors) about 18.01 percent of the total organized work force.

Last year the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), through its women Empowerment Committee Conducted survey of white-collar in 149 member companies across different sectors and regions. The percentage of women employees in medium companies was 18 percent, large companies 4 percent. At the managerial level, the percent of women at junior level was 16 percent, middle level 4 percent, senior level 4 percent and at senior-most levels, just 1 percent. Today, to survive competition in a globalizes market, many organizations are our sourcing and contracting out their work. This certainly has created opportunities for home-based work, especially for women in sectors like textile, garments and electronics.

The natural enterprises of Indian women can be nurtured through innovations schemes of micro-finance. The government, financial institutions and private sector can join hands to create women entrepreneurs.

7)      Every family owned business need to an equal chance to their daughters.

  1.                      (Eg.)   “Mukherjee & Sons” and

                                “Pastronjee & Sons” but also

                                “Mukherjee & Daughters” and

                    “Pastronjee & Daughters”

The government must lead the way and corporate NGO’s and educational institutions should join in to support and work for change. Real change will come when our women are treated on par with men and given equal opportunities. Indian will be able to harness its women power and emerge as a respected nation.
