Including Your Temporary Jobs When Designing An Executive Resume

While searching for an executive level job, have you spent time working temporary positions? You might have an inclination to omit these temporary jobs from the next draft of your executive resume. However, most employers are certainly used to seeing temporary occupations listed.

As many executives know, some temp jobs can be as challenging and rewarding as full time occupations, especially on the executive level. So as you write your resume, don’t feel that your temp positions deserve anything less that the treatment you would give a permanent position. More importantly, be sure not to leave them out. Instead, learn how to add them on. Here are a few steps to consider:

Follow the Standard Resume Format

You may be tempted to use different resume format since you’re adding material that is not considered standard on your resume. This can be a mistake, as you’ll want to keep your executive resume as normal and standardized as possible. This means making your temp job entry the same as the other employment history entries on your resume.

How, then, can you show that the temp position was different in some way from your other positions? Well, since a temporary position isn’t exactly the same, you would simply add “temporary” at the end of your job title. For an example, if you were an executive in charge of communications, you’d write something like “Executive Communications Director, Temporary” on your executive resume. This is the only reference to your position being temporary that is necessary. If the employer has more questions during the interview then you can answer them then.

Make Sure to Add to Regular Job Section

Again, you want your temporary position to have the same feel as the other jobs on your resume. When you’re adding in the other positions you’ve held, executive or otherwise, you’ll want to put the temporary job in its logical place. In other words, don’t create a separate “temporary” section. The truth is you fulfilled the duties of any real employee in the same position. Don’t diminish the job in any way–treat it as a real position?

Listing Your Agencies

If you were hired on a temporary basis through an agency, you do want to list the agency on your resume. If you had only one assignment through the agency then it’s a good idea to combine the assignment and agency into a single entry. In other words, you would list the job you worked for and your title then list the agency you worked for in the job description.

On the other hand, if you had multiple assignments through an agency then you want to list the agency in the place where you would normally list the company. If you want to list more than one of assignments you had with the agency, the will be listed as bullet points under the company. If you’re only listing a single assignment, though, you’d still list your agency as the company, then detail the assignment in the job description.

Finding an Executive Job Through a Temp Agency

As an executive, it’s customary to feel that the only way to find employment is through networking. While this is a vital aspect in job seeking at such a high level, it’s not the only way. In fact, a trend has been set in recent years for executives to find their employment opportunities through temp agencies.

This may sound unorthodox and possibly ineffective. While it may be a bit unorthodox, ineffective it is not. In fact, many executives have found great opportunities taking this route. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits of executives venturing into the temp pool.

Immediate Access to a Job

If you’ve been in the job pool for weeks, or even months, and have had little luck finding a permanent position, the temp pool can help you find immediate access to an executive-level job. This means, by having the temp agency fit you into a temporary executive position, you can usually start within a few days of hearing about the position.

As with many other temp jobs, you will be expected to hit the ground running. However, as an executive, you are probably used to having to catch on at a pretty fast pace. The great news is that you will have an opportunity to make a huge difference in the company during your limited time there.

No Need to Commit

As with other temporary opportunities, you have an opportunity to test the waters with a specific company to decide if it is a good place for you. There are times that a company can be perfect for you, and there are also times that a company is not a match at all. By working as a temporary executive, you have the opportunity to see if you fit well within that company. If you don’t then there’s no need to commit. When you’re assignment is finished, you simply leave and re-enter the temp pool for your next executive opportunity.

Can Turn Into a Permanent Opportunity

On the other hand, if you find that you really enjoy taking on an executive role at a specific company, often times you can find yourself taking on the opportunity permanently. What’s unique about being a temporary executive is that you are asked to not just fill in for someone while they’re missing, but also to interact with employees and make huge decisions that could change the future of the business. This is a big deal – to you and the company.

So if, for instance, an executive has quit and the company takes you on as an interim executive while the filter through the candidate pool, if you successfully fill your role, you might also be considered. This is how many entry- and executive-level jobs are filled. You’ve already bypassed the networking stage and have created relationships within the company. So with the right communication set forth, you might find yourself being hired permanently for the job.

If your job search has been slow moving, don’t feel discouraged. There are still great opportunities available at the executive level. So get your resume and cover letter polished, then take it to a temp agency; you’d be surprised by the number of opportunities available there.

As the current economic recession drags on (though positive signs are beginning to emerge), the unemployment level has been steadily climbing.  This can be a stressful time in one’s life, but there are ways and means for a person who is unemployed to cope with and manage the situation as best as possible.

View The Situation In a Positive Light

View your loss as an opportunity. Start exercising more, prepare healthy, tasty home cooked meals and spend more time with family and friends.  If funds allow, you may wish to travel, update skills, change your career or undertake volunteer work.

Apply For Unemployment Benefits

Reassess Your Career and Set New Goals

One major upside to temping is that quite often these temp jobs become permanent, with full benefits. These positions are known as “temp-to-perm” in the industry.

Find Creative Ways To Save Money

Draw up a budget of how much you can afford to spend every week and stick to it.  It may mean more time between haircuts and hair styles, less dinning out, etc. but these steps must be taken. You must go into survival mode when you are unemployed and looking for that next job opportunity to seize.

Remain Positive

Mindset is everything. It may take some time to get back in the workforce or set up a small, part-time business but don’t give up. You are awesome. Believe in yourself. Stay motivated and keep focused on your goal of landing that great new job. You will get there!
